The Standing Committee on National Defence and Veterans Affairs met at 9:00 o'clock a.m. this day, in Room 705, La Promenade, the Vice-Chair, Robert Bertrand, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Robert Bertrand, Bernie Collins, Jack Frazer, John O'Reilly and John Richardson.

Acting Members present: Pierre de Savoye for Jean H. Leroux; Herb Grubel for Jim Hart.

In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Wolf Koerner and Michel Rossignol, Research Officers.

Witnesses: From the Department of National Defence: BGen. I. Popowych, Director General, Personnel Services; J.F.J. Jamieson, Director, Military Family Support; W.D. Roberts, President, Service Income Security Insurance Program; G. Haman, Chief Financial Officer; L. Climie, Directorate Military Family Support; Col. W.E. Morton, Director General, Infrastructure.

In accordance with its mandate under Standing Order 108(2), the Committee resumed its consideration of a Review of the Social and Economic Challenges Facing Members of the Canadian Forces. (See Minutes of Proceedings and Evidence dated Wednesday, February 12, 1997, Issue No. 2).

General Popowych made an opening statement and, with the other witnesses, answered questions.

At 10:28 o'clock a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 10:34 o'clock a.m., the sitting resumed.

J. Jamieson made an opening statement and, with L. Climie and General Popowych, answered questions.

At 11:12 o'clock a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
