| April 4, 2008 — Mr. Rae (Toronto Centre) — That a special committee, consisting of 12 members, be appointed to consider the Canadian mission in Afghanistan as referred to in the motion adopted by the House on March 13, 2008 (Government Business No. 5); that the Committee have all of the powers of a Standing Committee as provided in the Standing Orders; and that the members to serve on the said Committee be appointed by the Whip of each party depositing with the Clerk of the House a list of his or her party’s members of the committee, providing that each party shall have the same number of members on the committee as it now has on the Standing Committees and provided that the said lists shall be deposited with the Clerk no later than April 10, 2008. |

| April 4, 2008 — Mr. LeBlanc (Beauséjour) — That the Standing Committee on Justice and Human Rights be instructed to undertake a study to determine whether existing statute law, including Section 119 of the Criminal Code, currently serve as effective deterrents in preventing attempts to bribe Members of Parliament and that the said Committee report its findings to the House no later than May 16, 2008. |

| April 4, 2008 — Mr. Bevilacqua (Vaughan) — That the Standing Committee on Citizenship and Immigration be instructed to undertake a study to evaluate the effects on immigration in Canada of Part 6 of Bill C-50, An Act to implement certain provisions of the budget tabled in Parliament on February 26, 2008 and to enact provisions to preserve the fiscal plan set out in that budget, which amends the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act to authorize the Minister of Citizenship and Immigration to give instructions with respect to the processing of certain applications and requests in order to support the attainment of immigration goals established by the Government of Canada, and that the said Standing Committee report its findings to the House no later than May 30, 2008. |

| M-478 — April 4, 2008 — Mr. Angus (Timmins—James Bay) — That, in the opinion of the House, the government should modify the system for setting by-election dates by passing new legislation that sets out a formula for them and that: (a) this formula should put the highest priority on electing a Member of Parliament to the House of Commons as early as possible after the seat becomes vacant: (b) this legislation should remove the power of establishing by-election dates from the Prime Minister’s office; (c) this legislation should put the power of establishing by-election dates with the Chief Electoral Officer; and (d) this formula should order the Chief Electoral Officer to call a by-election within 45 days, for an election within 90 days, of the date that the seat becomes vacant, unless the seat becomes vacant less than 120 days before the next fixed general election date. |
