The House resumed consideration of the motion of Mr. Serré (Nickel Belt), seconded by Mr. Nault (Kenora), — That, in the opinion of the House, the government should: (a) recognize that seniors, namely Canadians aged 65 or older, make up a demographic that requires ongoing attention from the government as the proportion of seniors relative to the Canadian population continues to grow (15% in 2015, 25% by 2035); (b) point out that it is working hard to help improve the lives of seniors, from restoring the age of eligibility for Old Age Security, to increasing the guaranteed income supplement for single seniors, to increasing benefits for couples living apart for reasons beyond their control and supporting affordable housing for seniors; (c) ask the Standing Committee on Human Resources, Skills and Social Development and the Status of Persons with Disabilities to study and report back to the House on important issues such as increasing income security for vulnerable seniors and ensuring quality of life and equality for all seniors via the development of a National Seniors Strategy; and (d) broaden the mandate of the National Seniors Council to allow it to undertake reviews and analysis on their own initiative and allow for a better representation of the diversity of experience and expertise on seniors, as well as to encourage it, following the study by the Standing Committee on Human Resources, Skills and Social Development and the Status of Persons with Disabilities referred to in (c), to provide advice on implementing a National Seniors’ Strategy. La Chambre reprend l'étude de la motion de M. Serré (Nickel Belt), appuyé par M. Nault (Kenora), — Que, de l’avis de la Chambre, le gouvernement devrait : a) reconnaître que les aînés, c’est-à-dire les Canadiens âgés de 65 ans et plus, constituent un groupe démographique qui requiert l’attention continue du gouvernement, étant donné que leur proportion par rapport au reste de la population canadienne continue d’augmenter (15 % en 2015, 25 % d’ici 2035); b) souligner qu’il a déployé d’importants efforts pour améliorer la qualité de vie des aînés, notamment en rétablissant l’âge d’admissibilité à la Sécurité de la vieillesse, en augmentant le Supplément de revenu garanti versé aux aînés vivant seuls, en augmentant les prestations versées aux couples séparés pour des raisons échappant à leur contrôle, et en appuyant l’accès au logement abordable pour les aînés; c) demander au Comité permanent des ressources humaines, du développement des compétences, du développement social et de la condition des personnes handicapées d’étudier et de faire rapport à la Chambre sur certains enjeux importants, notamment l’élaboration d’une stratégie nationale pour les aînés visant à améliorer la sécurité du revenu pour les aînés vulnérables et à offrir une meilleure qualité de vie et l’égalité à tous les aînés; d) élargir le mandat du Conseil national des aînés afin que celui-ci puisse effectuer des examens et des analyses de son propre chef et mieux représenter la diversité de l’expérience et de l’expertise en ce qui concerne les aînés, de même que l’encourager, à la suite de l’étude du Comité permanent des ressources humaines, du développement des compétences, du développement social et de la condition des personnes handicapées mentionnée en c), à lui prodiguer des conseils sur la mise en œuvre d’une stratégie nationale pour les aînés.
