Special Committee on the Canada-People’s Republic of China Relationship (CACN)

Mandate

The House of Commons appointed a special committee with the mandate to conduct hearings to examine and review all aspects of the Canada–People’s Republic of China relationship, including but not limited to, diplomatic, consular, legal, security and economic relations on May 16, 2022.

Summary of Committee Activity

On June 13, 2022, the committee held its organizational meeting. Ken Hardie was elected Chair of the committee, Michael D. Chong was elected first vice-chair, Stéphane Bergeron was elected second vice-chair and Heather McPherson was elected third vice-chair.

Special Committee on Afghanistan (AFGH)

Mandate

On December 8, 2021, the House of Commons adopted a motion establishing the Special Committee on Afghanistan with a mandate to examine and review the events related to the fall of Afghanistan to the Taliban, including, but not limited to, the government's contingency planning for that event and the subsequent efforts to evacuate, or otherwise authorize entry to Canada of, Canadian citizens, and interpreters, contractors and other Afghans who had assisted the Canadian Armed Forces or other Canadian organizations. The House also instructed the committee to conduct its work with the primary objective of assessing the humanitarian assistance to be put in place by Canada to assist the Afghan people.

Summary of Committee Activity

During the period of April 1 to August 31, 2022, the committee continued its study of the situation in Afghanistan, pursuant to the Order of Reference from the House of December 8. The committee met nine times during this period and heard from four Ministers and 27 witnesses. The committee adopted its final report on June 6 and presented it to the House on June 8, and in so doing ceased to exist.
