Bible
On 3 August 1927 the Prince of Wales — the future King Edward VIII — climbed the Peace Tower for the dedication of the central altar in the Memorial Chamber, the national shrine created to honour Canada’s war dead. The First World War Book of Remembrance was not yet completed and would be installed many years later, in 1942.
The heir to the throne brought his own copy of the Holy Bible to place upon the altar in the centre of the space. It is a plain, leather-bound copy, without the decorative embellishments one might expect of a royal possession. The prince took up a quill and inscribed, “I dedicate this bible to the undying memory of those in whose honour this chamber has been built – Edward, Ottawa, 3 - viii – 27.”
