Selected Decisions of Speaker Jeanne Sauvé 1980-1984
Adjournment Motion / Proposed under Standing Order 30 - Application Accepted
Debate urgent
Debates p. 27008
Background
Mr. Broadbent (Oshawa) sought leave to move the adjournment of the House, under the provisions of Standing Order 30, in order to discuss "the immoral shooting down of a South Korean civilian aircraft by the Soviet Union resulting in the loss of 269 lives, including those of ten Canadians". In his view, such a grave event "demands immediate Government action to ensure the protection of Canadians and citizens of other countries who travel on civilian aircraft on international routes". The Speaker ruled immediately.
Issue
Does the application meet the requirements of Standing Order 30?
Decision
Yes. The application is accepted.
Reasons given by the Speaker
This very grave and important question is indeed a matter requiring urgent consideration in that it is "so pressing that the public interest will suffer if it is not given immediate attention."
