Pursuant to the order of reference of Wednesday, June 21, 2023, the committee resumed consideration of Bill C-53, An Act respecting the recognition of certain Métis governments in Alberta, Ontario and Saskatchewan, to give effect to treaties with those governments and to make consequential amendments to other Acts.

The Minister made a statement and, with Martin Reiher, answered questions.

At 4:53 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 4:57 p.m., the sitting resumed.

Motion

Bob Zimmer moved, — That the committee resume consideration of his motion moved on Thursday, November 9, 2023, which read as follows:

That pursuant to standing order 108(2), given that Ontario Grand Chief, Abram Benedict of the Akwesasne First Nation says the carbon tax is an unfair policy for indigenous communities, that the committee undertake a study of five meetings, to examine the impact of the carbon tax on First Nations communities across Canada, that the Minister of Crown-Indigenous Relations and the Minister of Indigenous services appear, and that the committee seek additional resources in order to accommodate these meetings.

The question was put on the motion and it was negatived on the following recorded division:

YEAS: Lori Idlout, Jamie Schmale, Gary Vidal, Arnold Viersen, Bob Zimmer — 5;

NAYS: Jaime Battiste, Ben Carr, Anna Gainey, Marilène Gill, Michael V. McLeod, Maninder Sidhu — 6.

Martin Reiher answered questions.

On motion of Gary Vidal, it was agreed, — That, pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the committee invite the Minister of Indigenous Services Canada, the Minister for Crown-Indigenous Relations, and the Minister of Northern Affairs to appear before the committee prior to rising for Christmas, to discuss the Supplementary Estimates (B), 2023-24, and that the meeting be televised.

Questioning of the witnesses resumed.

At 5:38 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
