Selected Decisions of Speaker Jeanne Sauvé 1980-1984
Adjournment Motion / Proposed under Standing Order 26 - Application not Accepted
Debate not urgent; other opportunities for debate
Debates pp. 14268-9
Background
Mr. Broadbent (Oshawa) sought leave to move the adjournment of the House, under the provisions of Standing Order 26, in order to discuss the economic crisis, which in his opinion demanded "an immediate program for national economic recovery". The Speaker ruled immediately.
Issue
Does the application meet the requirements of Standing Order 26?
Decision
No. The application is not accepted.
Reasons given by the Speaker
Although the state of the economy is a highly important matter, it may not be dealt with in an emergency debate because it has been a recurring subject of debate throughout the session. Furthermore, because of the continuing nature of the problem other opportunities will arise to debate it, most notably during the current supply period.
