In accordance with the motion adopted at the meeting of June 19, 2018, the House of Commons Standing Committee on Veterans Affairs is undertaking “a study of the challenges faced by homeless veterans, the causes that lead to their homelessness and Veterans Affairs Canada’s efforts to address this issue”.
The objectives pursued are, among others, to:
- Clarify the scope of the problem by having a better idea of the number of homeless veterans in Canada, despite the difficulties inherent in such an assessment;
- Identify the challenges facing organizations that help homeless veterans;
- Raise awareness among organizations that help homeless people, such as shelters, about specific issues affecting homeless veterans;
- Acknowledge the most promising initiatives in support of homeless veterans;
- Better identify the types of interventions that, in order to be effective, should be the responsibility of the federal government, and those that are best left to other levels of government and community organizations; and
- Clarify the role of Veterans Affairs Canada in supporting homeless veterans and in supporting organizations that help them.
