The Standing Committee on Health met at 11:09 a.m. this day, in Room 308 West Block, the Vice-Chair, Rob Merrifield, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Colin Carrie, Jean Crowder, Nicole Demers, Steven John Fletcher, Réal Ménard, Rob Merrifield, Michael John Savage and Hon. Robert Thibault.

 

Acting Members present: Gary Carr for Hon. Brenda Chamberlain, Russ Powers for Bonnie Brown, Merv Tweed for James Lunney and Borys Wrzesnewskyj for Ruby Dhalla.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Nancy Miller Chenier, Analyst; Sonya Norris, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Department of Health: Denis Choinière, Director, Office of Regulations and Compliance, Tobacco Control Program, Healthy Environments and Consumer Safety Branch; Victoria Tunstall, Regulatory Policy Analyst, Office of Regulation and Compliance, Tobacco Control Program, Healthy Environments and Consumer Satefy Branch. Physicians for a Smoke-Free Canada: Neil E. Collishaw, Research Director; Cyril Sabbah, Research biologist.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

On motion of Steven John Fletcher, it was agreed, — That the Standing Committee on Health request that the Minister of Health refrain from any action pertaining to the Internet Pharmacy industry until the Committee has fully studied the issue and submitted its recommendations to the House.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 32(5), the Committee commenced consideration of the Proposed Regulations Amending the Tobacco Reporting Regulations, pursuant to the Tobacco Act, S.C. 1997, c. 13, sbs. 42.1(1), referred to the Committee on Tuesday, December 14, 2004.
 

Neil E. Collishaw, Cyril Sabbah and Denis Choinière made statements and, with the other witness, answered questions.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

It was agreed, — That the proposed budget in the amount of $9,100 for the meeting with the Canadian Patient Safety Institute and the authors of the Canadian Adverse Events Study, be adopted and that the Chair present the said budget to the Budget Subcommittee of the Liaison Committee.

 

At 12:47 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
