SECU Committee Report

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), and a motion adopted by the Committee on Tuesday, October 17, 2006, the Committee has agreed to report the following:

Conformément à l'article 108(2) du Règlement et la motion adoptée par le Comité le mardi 17 octobre 2006, le Comité a accepté de faire rapport de ce qui suit:

That this Committee recommends that the Government of Canada take the following action:

Que le Comité recommande au gouvernement du Canada de prendre les mesures suivantes:

• Issue an official apology to Maher Arar and his family;

• Présenter des excuses officielles à Maher Arar et à sa famille;

• Negotiate compensation with Mr. Arar for the ordeal of pain and suffering that he and his family endured;

• Négocier un dédommagement avec M. Arar pour les souffrances et les difficultés que lui et sa famille ont endurées;

• Object to the American government for its breach of domestic and international undertakings in the confinement and rendition of Maher Arar to Syria;

• S'élever contre la violation par le gouvernement américain de ses engagements nationaux et internationaux en rapport avec l'emprisonnement de M. Arar et avec son extradition vers la Syrie;

• Protest to the Syrian government for its torture of Mr. Arar; and

• Protester auprès du gouvernement syrien, qui a torturé M. Arar et;

• Implement all the recommendations of the O’Connor Commission.
