Introduction of Government Bills

Recommendation

His Excellency the Governor General recommends to the House of Commons the appropriation of public revenue under the circumstances, in the manner and for the purposes set out in a measure entitled ``An Act to amend the National Housing Act and the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation Act and to make a consequential amendment to another Act''.

GOVERNMENT ORDERS

The Order was read for the consideration of the Business of Supply.

Ms. St-Jacques (Shefford), seconded by Mr. Dubé (Madawaska -- Restigouche), moved, -- That, in the opinion of this House, the government should take steps to alleviate the burden of poverty in Canada by encouraging self-sufficiency and self-reliance, and to that end, should increase the basic Income Tax credit to $10,000, index the tax brakets and index the Child Tax Benefit.

Mr. Epp (Elk Island), seconded by Mr. Ramsay (Crowfoot), moved the following amendment, -- That the motion be amended by striking out the words ``increase the basic Income Tax credit to $10,000'' and substituting the following therefor:

``increase the tax-free threshold to $7,900''

``2. This Act comes into force on a day to be fixed by order of the Governor in Council.''
