NOTICE OF MOTION

Mr. Boudria (Leader of the Government in the House of Commons) gave notice of the intention to move a motion at the next sitting of the House, pursuant to Standing Order 78(3), for the purpose of allotting a specified number of days or hours for the consideration and disposal of the report stage and third reading stage of Bill C-20, An Act to give effect to the requirement for clarity as set out in the opinion of the Supreme Court of Canada in the Quebec Secession Reference.

      "Whereas when the Quebec people were consulted by a referendum in 1995, the winning choice was the one that obtained a majority of the votes declared valid, that is, fifty percent of the votes plus one vote;"

By unanimous consent, Ms. Lalonde (Mercier), seconded by Mr. Bergeron (Verchères -- Les-Patriotes), moved Motion No. 12, -- That Bill C-20, in the preamble, be amended by deleting lines 21 to 30 on page 2.

Debate arose on the motions in Group No. 1 (Motions Nos. 1 to 12).

Ms. Alarie (Louis-Hébert), seconded by Mr. Tremblay (Lac- Saint-Jean), moved the following amendment, -- That Motion No. 5 be amended in the French version by adding after the word ``donné'' the following:

PRIVATE MEMBERS' BUSINESS

At 1:30 p.m., pursuant to Standing Order 30(6), the House proceeded to the consideration of Private Members' Business.

The House resumed consideration of the motion of Mr. MacKay (Pictou -- Antigonish -- Guysborough), seconded by Mr. Bernier (Tobique -- Mactaquac), -- That, in the opinion of this House, the Criminal Code or other appropriate federal statutes should be amended in accordance with Recommendation 73 of the Province of Nova Scotia's Public Inquiry into the Westray disaster, specifically with the goal of ensuring that corporate executives and directors are held properly accountable for workplace safety. (Private Members' Business M-79)

The debate continued.

Pursuant to Standing Order 93, the Order was dropped to the bottom of the order of precedence on the Order Paper.
