Tabling of Documents

Pursuant to Standing Order 32(2), Mr. Lee (Parliamentary Secretary to the Leader of the Government in the House of Commons) laid upon the Table, -- Government response, pursuant to Standing Order 36(8), to the following petitions:

-- Nos. 371-0058 and 371-0096 concerning the agricultural industry. -- Sessional Paper No. 8545-371-17-02.

Introduction of Private Members' Bills

Pursuant to Standing Orders 68(2) and 69(1), on motion of Mr. Adams (Peterborough), seconded by Mr. Szabo (Mississauga South), Bill C-327, An Act to establish a national standard for the representation of dates in all- numeric form, was introduced, read the first time, ordered to be printed and ordered for a second reading at the next sitting of the House.

Presenting Petitions

Pursuant to Standing Order 36, petitions certified correct by the Clerk of Petitions were presented as follows:

-- by Mr. Martin (Winnipeg Centre), two concerning international trade (Nos. 371-0136 and 371-0137).

GOVERNMENT ORDERS

The Order was read for the consideration of the Business of Supply.

Mr. Day (Okanagan -- Coquihalla), seconded by Mr. Strahl (Fraser Valley), moved, -- That this House call for the establishment of an independent judicial inquiry to determine if the Prime Minister is in breach of conflict of interest rules regarding his involvement with the Grand- Mère Golf Club and the Grand-Mère Inn; and that the inquiry should have broad terms of reference with the power to subpoena all relevant documents and witnesses.

Debate arose thereon.

Ms. Meredith (South Surrey -- White Rock -- Langley), seconded by Mr. Reynolds (West Vancouver -- Sunshine Coast), moved the following amendment, -- That the motion be amended by adding the word ``immediate'' before the word ``establishment''.

MOTIONS

By unanimous consent, it was ordered, -- That, at the conclusion of the debate on today's Opposition motion, all questions necessary to dispose of this motion be deemed put and a recorded division deemed requested and deferred until Wednesday, April 4, 2001, at the expiry of the time provided for Government Orders.

PRIVATE MEMBERS' BUSINESS

Pursuant to Standing Order 30(6), the House proceeded to the consideration of Private Members' Business.

The Order was read for the second reading and reference to the Standing Committee on Finance of Bill C-222, An Act to amend the Income Tax Act (deduction of expenses incurred by a mechanic for tools required in employment).

Mr. Guimond (Beauport -- Montmorency -- Côte-de-Beaupré -- Île d'Orléans), seconded by Mr. Cardin (Sherbrooke), moved, -- That the Bill be now read a second time and referred to the Standing Committee on Finance.

Debate arose thereon.

Pursuant to Standing Order 93, the Order was dropped to the bottom of the order of precedence on the Order Paper.

EMERGENCY DEBATE

Pursuant to Standing Order 52(10), the House proceeded to the consideration of a motion to adjourn the House for the purpose of discussing a specfic and important matter requiring urgent consideration, namely, foot-and-mouth disease.

Mr. Borotsik (Brandon -- Souris), seconded by Mr. Thompson (New Brunswick Southwest), moved, -- That this House do now adjourn.
