Mr. Fletcher (Charleswood—St. James—Assiniboia), seconded by Mr. Merrifield (Yellowhead), moved, — That, given a national strategy is needed now to reduce the growing human and economic costs of cancer, heart disease and mental illness; the House call on the government to fully fund and implement the Canadian Strategy for Cancer Control in collaboration with the provinces and all stake holders, and given that Canada is one of the few developed countries without a national action plan for effectively addressing mental illness and heart disease, the government should immediately develop and initiate a comprehensive national strategy on mental illness, mental health and heart disease.

M. Fletcher (Charleswood—St. James—Assiniboia), appuyé par M. Merrifield (Yellowhead), propose, — Que, puisqu’il faut élaborer dès maintenant une stratégie nationale pour réduire les coûts humains et économiques de plus en plus lourds du cancer, des cardiopathies et des maladies mentales, la Chambre demande au gouvernement de financer intégralement et de mettre en œuvre, en symbiose avec les provinces et tous les intervenants, la Stratégie canadienne de lutte contre le cancer ainsi que d'élaborer et d'appliquer sans délai une stratégie nationale d’ensemble sur les maladies mentales et les cardiopathies, le Canada étant un des rares pays développés à ne pas avoir de plan d’action national pour réduire l’incidence des maladies mentales et des maladies du cœur.

Pursuant to Order made Friday, June 3, 2005, the House proceeded to the taking of the deferred recorded division on the motion of Mr. Marceau (Charlesbourg—Haute-Saint-Charles), seconded by Mr. Côté (Portneuf—Jacques-Cartier), — That the House denounce the recent remarks made by Mr. Justice Michel Robert stating that it is acceptable to discriminate on the basis of political opinion when appointing candidates to the federal judiciary and that it call on the Standing Committee on Justice, Human Rights, Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness to create a special subcommittee with the mandate to examine the process for appointments to the federal judiciary and make recommendations for reform, with the primary goal of eliminating political partisanship from the process, by October 31, 2005.
