Pursuant to the order of reference of Monday, May 16, 2022, the committee resumed its study of the Canada–People’s Republic of China relations.

Fen Osler Hampson and Gordon Houlden made statements and answered questions.

At 8:06 p.m., the sitting resumed.

Motion

Kyle Seeback moved, — That the Special Committee on the Canada - People’s Republic of China Relationship expresses its deep disappointment that the Minister of Finance ignored invitations sent by the committee; and, that the Minister of Finance has chosen not to appear during the committee’s meeting on Canada’s freeze in government-led activity with the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank; and that this be reported to the House.

Debate arose thereon.

Motion

Peter Fragiskatos moved, — That the debate be now adjourned.

The question was put on the motion and it was negatived on the following recorded division:

Amendment

Heather McPherson moved, — That the motion be amended by adding, after the word “That”, the following: “, if the committee does not have a confirmed date for the appearance of the Minister within one week after the adoption of this motion,”.

Marie-France Lalonde moved, — That the motion be amended by replacing the words “the Minister of Finance ignored invitations sent by the committee; and, that the Minister of Finance has chosen not to appear”, the following “that the Minister of Finance was unable to appear”.
