Pursuant to Standing Order 108(3)(f) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Thursday, February 23, 2017, the Committee resumed its study of Air Canada’s implementation of the Official Languages Act.

Pascale Giguère made a statement and, with Jean Marleau and Mary Donaghy, answered questions.

At 11:59 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 12:07 p.m., the sitting resumed.

The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.

Motion

François Choquette moved, — That the Committee recommend to the Prime Minister that he meet with the Fédération des communautés francophones et acadiennes du Canada and the Quebec Community Groups Network in order to include them in the process for selecting the next Commissioner of Official Languages; and that the Chair report this to the House.

Debate arose thereon.

It was agreed, — That the debate be now adjourned.

Motion

François Choquette moved, — That the Committee recommend to the Prime Minister that he respect the Official Languages Act which mandates real consultation with opposition party leaders, not simply informing them, by means of a letter, of the government’s choice; and that the Chair report this to the House.

Debate arose thereon.

It was agreed, — That the debate be now adjourned.

At 12:17 p.m., the sitting resumed in camera.

It was agreed, — That, on Tuesday, June 13, 2017, the Committee resume debate on François Choquette's motions; and that the Committee invite the Interim Commissioner of Official Languages to appear from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. in relation to the 2016-17 Annual Report.

It was agreed, — That the Committee travel to Brome-Missisquoi, Quebec, Cape Breton and Grand Pré de la Vallée, Nova Scotia, in the Fall of 2017, in relation to its study of the Review of the Status of Official Languages in Minority Settings across Canada.

It was agreed, — That the Chair, on behalf of the Committee, send a letter to all the witnesses who appeared on Tuesday, May 9, 2017 in relation to the study of the issues related to French-language training in the field of nursing in Canada, in order to inform them that the members still have concerns and wish to pursue this study upon their return from the Summer adjournment; that the Analyst prepare a draft letter; and that this draft letter be considered in Committee on Tuesday, June 13, 2017.

It was agreed, — That the meeting on Thursday, June 15, 2017 be cancelled.

At 12:46 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
