Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the committee proceeded to a briefing on the mandate and priorities of the minister of National Defence.

The Minister made a statement and, with Gen Wayne Eyre, answered questions.

At 4:37 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 4:41 p.m., the sitting resumed.

Gen Wayne Eyre, Bill Matthews, and Caroline Xavier answered questions.

Motion

James Bezan moved, — That, pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the committee undertake a study on the lack of housing availability on or near bases for Canadian Armed Forces members and the challenges facing members required to move across the country; that the committee shall hold a minimum of four meetings for the duration of the study; and that the committee report its findings and recommendations to the House.

Amendment

Bryan May moved, — That the motion be amended by replacing the words “and the challenges facing members required to move across the country” with the following: “and their families and the challenges facing members and their families when they are required to move across the country including access to childcare, spousal employment, education and healthcare”.

Bryan May moved, — That the committee do now adjourn.
