Motion

Gérard Deltell moved, — Given that the Jasper wildfire investigation has revealed:

  1. Then Liberal Environment Minister Catherine McKenna was warned in 2017 by multiple forestry experts that a catastrophic fire in Jasper was inevitable if the Liberal government did not act;
  2. “Nothing was done to address the landscape of beetle-killed timber to prevent the mega fire of July 22, 2024,” according to testimony from forestry expert Ken Hodges; and
  3. Former Liberal Environment Minister Catherine McKenna has refused to testify at the Jasper wildfire investigation on multiple occasions despite repeated requests from the committee.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(1), the committee summon former Liberal Minister of Environment and Climate Change, Catherine McKenna, to appear on November 6, 2024.

Debate arose thereon.

Amendment

Adam van Koeverden moved, — That the motion be amended by:

  1. Replacing the word “summon” with the word “invite”; and
  2. Adding after the words “Catherine McKenna,” the following: “former environment minister Leona Aglukkaq, former environment minister Peter Kent and his policy adviser at the time, Melissa Lantsman”

Debate arose thereon.

Motion

Leah Taylor Roy moved, — That the committee do now adjourn.

The question was put on the motion and it was agreed to on the following recorded division:

YEAS: Shafqat Ali, Sophie Chatel, Lloyd Longfield, Heather McPherson, Leah Taylor Roy, Denis Trudel, Adam van Koeverden — 7;

NAYS: Gérard Deltell, Dane Lloyd, Dan Mazier, Gerald Soroka — 4.
