Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the committee on Wednesday, November 8, 2023, the committee resumed its study of the opioid epidemic and toxic drug crisis in Canada.

The witnesses made statements and answered questions.

Motion

Gord Johns moved, — That the committee instruct the Chair to write to the Auditor General of Canada to recommend that a performance audit examining the federal government’s response to the opioid and toxic drug crisis in Canada, including but not limited to its management of programs identified in the Canadian Drugs and Substances Strategy, be initiated, and conducted on a priority basis.

The question was put on the motion and it was agreed to, by a show of hands: YEAS: 11; NAYS: 0.

Questioning of the witnesses resumed.

Motion

Gord Johns moved, — That, pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), given the increasing prevalence of privatized health care across the country and the difficulty Canadians face in getting the health care they need, the committee undertake a study of at least four meetings on protecting Canada’s public health care system against for-profit corporations, and that the committee invite the Chief Executive Officer of for-profit health care providers like Loblaw Companies Limited to testify.

Debate arose thereon.

Brendan Hanley moved, — That the motion be amended by adding after the words “the committee undertake a study of at least four meetings on” the following: “the role of the private sector in Canada's public health care system, including”.
