Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the committee on Thursday, May 30, 2024, the committee commenced its study of Canada's anti-racism strategy.

The Minister made a statement and, with Isabelle Mondou, answered questions.

Motion

Michael Coteau moved, — That the committee proceed to the consideration of the motion of Taleeb Noormohamed moved by Sherry Romanado on Thursday, May 9, 2024.

The question was put on the motion and it was agreed to on the following recorded division:

YEAS: Niki Ashton, Jaime Battiste, Martin Champoux, Michael Coteau, Joël Lightbound, Taleeb Noormohamed, Jennifer O'Connell — 7;

NAYS: Dan Albas, Jacques Gourde, Jamil Jivani, Kevin Waugh — 4.

The committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to committee business.

The committee resumed consideration of the motion of Taleeb Noormohamed moved on Thursday, May 9, 2024, which read as follows:

That, pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the committee undertake a study of no fewer than four meetings to study the concerning rise in far-right extremism in Canada and that the study include how far-right extremism plays a role in misinformation and disinformation; how to better support preventable measures for ideologically motivated extremism in Canada and the connection between far-right extremism and harassment towards journalists, women, indigenous peoples, Black and racialized communities, members of the 2SLGBTQI+ community and religious minorities; that the committee report its findings and recommendations to the House; and that pursuant to Standing Order 109, the committee request that the government table a comprehensive response to the report.

and of the amendment of Niki Ashton moved on Thursday, May 9, 2024, which read as follows:

That the motion be amended by adding, after the words “Standing Order 108(2), the committee”, the following: “condemn the leader of the official opposition for visiting a convoy camp that celebrated far-right extremists and a group whose founder was referred to as violent extremists by Canada’s Integrated Terrorism Assessment Centre and”.

Debate arose thereon.

Kevin Waugh raised a question of privilege regarding the order of debate.

RULING BY THE CHAIR

The Chair ruled that the matter does not relate to privilege.

The committee resumed consideration of the motion of Taleeb Noormohamed moved on Thursday, May 9, 2024, which read as follows:
